Musical taste is your ability to recognize music that resonates with you and serves the experience you want to create. It develops over time through listening, dancing, performing, and reflecting on what moves both you and your audience.

Most people treat taste as something they were born with. It is not. Every track you love or skip got there through culture and family, through friends who made something feel like yours too, through the country you live in, through the media and communities you spend time in, and through your own personality. Taste is not a fixed identity, it is a record of everywhere you have been.

That matters practically, because a lot of what feels like dislike is really just unfamiliarity that never got tested. Confusing “unfamiliar” with “bad” is the most common way a DJ’s library stops growing. The more time you spend around a sound, the more you can actually hear what is happening inside it, which is why curiosity tends to be worth more than confidence here. Month 2 of The Loop Academy opens with exactly this question.
