Music discovery is the ongoing process of finding new music through artists, labels, recommendations, communities, events, and personal exploration. Great DJs continuously expand their musical horizons while staying intentional about what they add to their library.
Discovery is a trained skill rather than luck. Active listening is something you train, and once it is on it does not really switch off again. A song plays in a shop, in a film score, in a friend’s car, and your brain starts doing the maths automatically about whether it could work on a Zouk floor. Great DJs do not wait for music to find them, they go looking.
Two habits do most of the work.
The first is using more than one source, because every source has a bias, and when a whole scene searches through the same window everybody ends up playing the same music.
The second is making capture effortless: a voice note, a screenshot, one messy playlist you never organize. The system does not need to be tidy, it needs to be frictionless. Month 2 of The Loop Academy turns this into a working routine.
