Music has the power to influence emotion, movement, memory, and connection. For a DJ, music is more than entertainment—it’s a tool for creating shared experiences.

Understanding the purpose of music helps DJs move beyond choosing “good songs” and instead focus on selecting music that supports the people, the moment, and the event.

Ask dancers why they dance and the answers come back as connection, fun, expression, community, emotion. Music is what makes those possible. It shapes atmosphere, behaviour, memory and physical energy all at once, and depending on where it lands it can energize, calm, connect, inspire, challenge, or heal.

This is also why a single track can carry a whole night. One opening song sets an intention that everything after it either builds on or breaks, and songs work like chapters where the meaning of each depends on what sits either side of it. The same song can be the highlight of one set and filler in another, which is the difference between choosing music and choosing moments. Month 1 of The Loop Academy spends a full lesson here before any talk of technique.
